How to make right decision?

April 13, 2006

“We found that when the choice was for something simple, such as purchasing oven gloves or shampoo, people made better decisions – ones that they remained happy with – if they consciously deliberated over the information,” says Dijksterhuis. “But once the decision was more complex such as for a house, too much thinking about it led people to make the wrong choice. Whereas, if their conscious mind was fully occupied on solving puzzles, their unconscious could freely consider all the information and they reached better decisions.”

This result suggests that the conscious mind is trustworthy only in minor matters.

“At some point in our evolution, we started to make decisions consciously, and we’re not very good at it. We should learn to let our unconscious handle the complicated things,” Dijksterhuis says.

Why is the conscious mind not perfect? And why does reason have limits? Researchers suggest that in fact, when we are consciously thinking about something, we unwillingly ignore a lot of details that might be relevant. We’re doing this without even realizing it. A complex decision is complex precisely because one needs to take into consideration lots of implications and the conscious mind is simply not very good at dealing with too much information. On the other hand the unconsciousness, the “intuition”, seems to be much more apt at doing it.

Promote Madurai as Industrial Hub!

April 13, 2006

As a Tier II city, Madurai was eminently placed to become a home for ITeS industry, provided the State government created a world-class IT Parks in association with private sector to cater to the infrastructure needs of ITeS, BPO and R&D companies. The Study identified that the availability of educated, trained labour force at competitive costs, the good work culture and the huge educational infrastructure were the strengths of Madurai to emerge as the knowledge gateway of Southern Tamilnadu.

Since, the city has a good social infrastructure and healthcare facilities, it could easily attract and retain talent from other places. The study also said that Madurai was well suited for biotechnology and medical plants research and cultivation. The government should speed up the construction of the Biotech Park to enable the biotechnology industry to source raw materials in a sustainable manner to provide value addition to scientifically tested herbal medicines.

O Podu – Must Read for everyone

April 13, 2006

This is a must read for everyone. We got to know about this organization through – HelpingMinds Group, who help the poor students for education and do other miscellaneous help to the society. Please read about oh podu in the site and get to know a very powerful tool in voting and democracy. I am so surprised that I didn’t know about this till now and I guess it will apply to many of us. Of course, no political party will publish anything about it to the people – but the election commission or media should have published about this!! Anyway, atlast some people from a paper magazine called “Theemtharikida” has formed this organization. Great!!

Can you believe, we have the power of making all the candidates loose the election and cannot appear for the next elections!? It is true. please read on – http://www.keetru.com/ohpodu/english.html

Made in Madurai

“O Podu” is a social awareness movement.

“O PODU’ means “cast the vote”. Voting is both the right and duty of the people. Another objective of our movement is to make people aware of their constitutional right to cast their vote under section 49 ‘O’.

On an average, in every election, nearly 45 percent of the eligible voters don’t vote at all. Therefore even if a winning candidate bags 30 percent of the polled votes, it amounts to getting the support of only about 16 percent of the total electorate. If more and more non voters begin to exercise their vote, the result of many elections would drastically change.

Why are many people not voting at all? One of the usual reasons cited is that they are unable to accept any candidate and don’t want to vote for anyone of the available candidates.

It is a unique feature of our Indian constitution that it has provided the legal right to the voter to reject all the candidates. Section 49 ‘O’ of the Election rules 1961, has empowered the voter with this right. This section has conferred the right to the voter to inform the booth officer, after the indelible ink mark has been marked, that the voter does not want to vote for any of the candidates. The section requires the booth officer to record the voter’s choice of 49 ‘O’.

“O PODU” movement will campaign for the following demands:

1. Every voter should cast the vote. Failure to cast the vote only prevents enhancement of the standards of politics.

2. If the voter feels all the candidates are unworthy, the best ay to communicate this view to the political parties is not through abstinence. The best method is to record this view through 49 ‘O’.

3. Secrecy of ballot is a right conferred on the voter by the Constitution. But the election commission’s procedure of not keeping 49 ‘O’ voting as secretive, amounts to a violation of this right. Therefore the Election commission should rectify this anomaly by introducing a separate button for 49 ‘O’ in the electronic voting machines, for the forthcoming Tamilnadu elections.

4. It is the duty of the Election commission to educate the booth officers about the availability of 49 ‘O while conducting classes to them on polling procedures. The present practice of booth officers expressing ignorance about 49 ‘O’ and refusing a vote to record under 49 ‘O’ should be totally eliminated.’

“O PODU” movement will campaign among voters, particularly the youth, seeking support for the above demands, by use of posters, pamphlets, meetings, T shirt messages, e mails and SMS.

Feeling bad for being administered by actors!

April 13, 2006

Note: This post is a very personal feeling and does not want to hurt anybody!

I am feeling bad and ashamed to see that we are being ruled/administered by actors or actresses – or someone from film industry.

If you keenly look into it – there are reasons to it – some one who is becoming popular Or someone who delivers dialogue in a soothing and motivating way to people or who acts in such roles. We need to be ashamed of it! No other person is there eligible?!

We have to understand the difference between the reel life and real life! And another reason is we are just relying on 50% population for voting. Many of us do not go to vote at all!!

If you have thoughts pour in…
